Course Overview
This air cargo–focused program is designed for individuals seeking specialist skills in aviation security screening within regulated transport environments. The course builds practical capability to operate effectively in air cargo security roles, including managing access to secure areas, conducting physical searches, and identifying weapons, explosives and prohibited items in accordance with approved procedures. Learners also develop hands-on skills in the use of screening technologies commonly deployed in air cargo operations, supported by essential awareness of dangerous goods and hazardous substances relevant to aviation freight.
Training is aligned to the operational realities of regulated air cargo facilities, freight forwarders and aviation screening points, with a strong focus on compliance, accuracy and situational awareness. On completion, graduates are prepared to carry out air cargo screening and examination activities within established transport security programs, contributing to the protection of aviation supply chains and the safe, lawful movement of goods.
Completion of this qualification forms part of the pathway to working as an air cargo screener; however, individuals must also meet the Department of Home Affairs Screener Accreditation Scheme requirements before performing screening duties independently.
Course Outcomes
On successful completion of this program, participants will receive the AVI20325 Certificate II in Transport Security Protection (Air Cargo Examination Officer), providing nationally recognised training aligned to regulated aviation security roles.
This course develops the practical skills required to perform air cargo screening and examination activities within approved transport security frameworks. Graduates are prepared to manage access to secure areas, conduct physical searches, identify weapons, explosives and prohibited items, and operate screening technologies commonly used in air cargo environments. The training also builds awareness of dangerous goods and hazardous substances, supporting safe, compliant and accurate screening practices across aviation supply chains.
Potential job outcomes may include:
- Air Cargo Examination Officer
- Air Cargo Screening Officer
- Registered Air Cargo Agent (RACA) Screening Officer
- Supply Chain Security Officer
Screener Accreditation Scheme (Department of Home Affairs)In addition to completing the Certificate II in Transport Security Protection, individuals working as air cargo screeners must meet the requirements of the Screener Accreditation Scheme administered by the Department of Home Affairs. This scheme ensures that transport security screeners are competent, current and authorised to perform screening functions independently within regulated aviation environments.
After completing the qualification, new screeners are required to undertake a minimum of 40 hours of supervised on-the-job training with their employer. During this period, screening activities must be conducted under supervision. Once workplace training is complete, the screener must successfully complete an accreditation assessment conducted by a Department of Home Affairs–approved Accreditor before they are authorised to make independent screening decisions.
To maintain screener approval, individuals must also complete annual professional development and successfully undertake annual re-accreditation assessments, as required by the Department of Home Affairs. These ongoing requirements are designed to ensure screeners remain up to date with evolving threats, technologies and regulatory expectations.

ASIC and Screener Accreditation Requirements
Employment in air cargo screening roles is subject to additional regulatory requirements that sit outside the training itself. While completion of the Certificate II in Transport Security Protection provides the required skills and knowledge for air cargo screening functions, individuals must also meet aviation security clearance and accreditation obligations before performing screening duties independently.
Air cargo screeners are required to hold a valid Aviation Security Identification Card (ASIC) to access secure airport environments once employed; however, individuals who are not yet employed and do not meet the operational need requirement for an ASIC may complete a Job Ready ASIC background check in order to undertake this course without a sponsoring employer. These requirements are administered under Australia’s aviation transport security framework.
In addition, screeners must be accredited under the Department of Home Affairs Screener Accreditation Scheme, which includes workplace-based training, formal assessment by an approved accreditor, and ongoing annual professional development and re-accreditation. Employers are responsible for supporting screeners through this process once employment commences.
Further information on these requirements, including how they apply in practice, is available in the dedicated articles below:
Asset College provides training aligned to these regulatory frameworks; however, final clearance, accreditation and ongoing approval decisions are determined by the relevant authorities and employers.

I would like to take this opportunity to profess that I thoroughly enjoyed the course. I found it to be highly informative, and met some wonderful people along the way.
In hindsight, Lynn was a profound teacher, an expert in her field, and disseminated the course with intuitive intelligence, vast security experiences, legislation examples, pragmatic situations examples, and panache, regarding to her teaching style.
Moreover, I would like to wish everyone the best of luck with their job search! Additionally, well done Asset College, for devising such a sterling, highly valuable Aviation Transport course! Lynn was a formidable teacher, and highly recommend this Aviation Transport course to anyone who wants to get in this industry.
