Australia’s most comprehensive Nationally Recognised qualification for firearms industry professionals.

Developed by Asset College over several years with input from dozens of firearms experts from across Australia, this course sets a new standard for professional roles in the firearms industry and pathways for career progression.

This course is suited to individuals in both the public and private sectors with the ability to be contextualised to suit organisational requirements.

This qualification is designed to provide participants with general and technical skills to work in specialised functions within the firearms industry.

The qualification includes knowledge and skills which are essential to ensuring public safety, including working within a complex legislative framework, making ethical decisions, managing risks, demonstrating proficiency with firearms, and a broad range of specialist competencies for key roles within the industry.

Specialist firearms personnel working at this level will apply knowledge and skills working autonomously in a broad range of contexts; and be responsible for the induction, training and supervision of others with varying degrees of competence.

This qualification may be delivered using any type or category of firearm which is authorised under the firearms legislation in the State/Territory where the training and assessment is being conducted.

Multiple specialisations to choose from:

This course has been designed with the flexibility to meet the demands of a complex and diverse industry. Complete one or multiple specialisations to develop the knowledge and skills for specific job roles, create a customised course to meet individual needs or select from 25 individual units for targeted training and professional development.

Essential entry requirements

Entrants to the Certificate IV in Firearms must:

  • Be over 18 years of age
  • Meet the fit and proper person legislative requirements for possession and use of firearms in the relevant Australian State/Territory
  • Be able to demonstrate safe handling experience with firearms, evidenced by completing a firearm safety course (approved for firearm licensing in Australia) issued within the previous 12 months, holding a current Australian firearms licence or current employment in a role where firearms are used.

Recommended entry requirements

It is recommended that entrants:

  • Have a minimum of 3 years experience in the safe handling and use of a variety of different firearms in a sporting, recreational or occupational environment
  • Hold HLTAID011 Provide First Aid (or its successor) attained within the last three years
  • Meet the requirements for working with children in the relevant Australian State/Territory
  • Hold TAE40116 Certificate IV in Training and Assessment (or its successor) or another relevant training and assessment qualification described in the Standards for RTO’s if undertaking the Firearms Instructor specialisation.

This course is not open to international students (student visa 500).

The Certificate IV in Firearms requires a total of 12 units, including 7 core units and 5 electives. Selection of specific units is required where a specialisation is sought, and additional units may be completed and issued on a Statement of Attainment.

Core Units

  • Work effectively in the firearms industry
  • Identify, assess and control risk when working with firearms
  • Promote legal and ethical behaviour with firearms
  • Identify and comply with firearms legislation, regulation and policy
  • Handle, use and maintain firearms
  • Perform firearms emergency and incident response procedures
  • Apply first aid treatment of a gunshot wound

Group A (Coach, Range Officer and Instructor)

  • Supervise the safe operation of firearms by individuals and groups
  • Provide marksmanship coaching
  • Conduct live fire range practices
  • Deliver introductory firearm safety training programs
  • Instruct use of firearms for security operations

Group B (Dealer and Armourer)

  • Provide technical advice on firearms
  • Buy, sell, transfer and dispose of firearms, ammunition and firearm related equipment
  • Inspect and test firearms for serviceability
  • Replace standard parts and fit accessories
  • Modify and repair firearms

Group C (Regulatory Compliance)

  • Provide advice on industry licensing requirements and processes
  • Audit firearms, registers and storage facilities
  • Develop range instructions and standard operating procedures
  • Develop and implement range safety templates

Group D (General Electives)

  • Apply advanced marksmanship skills
  • Demonstrate holster proficiency
  • Use firearms in low light conditions
  • Reload small arms ammunition

August Parramatta Course

5 days in class

This course is for experienced firearms instructors only. It will include a 5 day workshop plus a combination of RPL and other assessments.

Prior to enrolment, you will be required to provide us with an overview of your firearms experience to ensure you are suitable for this course.

This course is not open to people outside of NSW. In order to attend this course you must hold a NSW firearms licence or a NSW 1F licence.
