Delivered through blended online study and five days of hands-on training with real security dogs, the program supports students preparing to apply for the Dog Patrol Security Officer function on a QLD Class 1 Security Providers Licence.
Course Overview
The QLD Security Dog Handler Course develops the specialist skills required to work safely and effectively with trained security dogs in patrol, protective services and high-risk environments. Designed for licensed Security Officers wanting to expand their operational capability, this course focuses on canine behaviour, wellbeing, operational control, risk awareness and professional K9 handling practices.
Students complete blended online study followed by five days of intensive, scenario-based practical training with real security dogs at Asset College’s North Lakes and Townsville campuses. This hands-on component provides authentic experience in patrol techniques, obedience foundations, environmental conditioning and handler safety – essential skills for K9 deployment across Queensland’s security industry.

Course Outcomes
Upon successful completion, students will receive a Statement of Attainment for the CPPSS00060 Canine Skill Set, which includes the following Units of Competency:
- CPPSEC3112 – Manage training and well-being of dogs for security functions
- CPPSEC3113 – Handle dogs for security patrols
This training develops the capability to:
- Safely handle and control security dogs during routine and high-risk patrol activities
- Monitor canine wellbeing, behaviour and operational readiness
- Apply structured training principles and environmental conditioning
- Work as part of a protective services team deploying K9 assets
- Maintain safety, situational awareness and professional conduct in operational environments
Graduates may pursue dog-handling roles across patrol operations, protective services, event environments and organisational security teams. These capabilities support applicants intending to apply for the Security Officer (Dog Patrol) function on a QLD Class 1 Security Providers Licence, depending on individual eligibility and experience.
Units of Competency
This Skill Set includes two nationally recognised units that form the foundation for security dog handling in Queensland:

- CPPSEC3113 – Handle dogs for security patrols

Licensing is a separate process managed by the Office of Fair Trading (OFT), and applicants must meet all probity, identification and eligibility requirements.

› Standard Course Fees
- $1,500 – Training delivered at an Asset College campus
- $1,750 – Training delivered in regional Queensland locations
These fees include access to learning materials, online theory components, five days of face-to-face practical training and assessment, and a range of student support services provided by Asset College.
› Recognition of Prior Learning (RPL)
- $600 – For eligible candidates completing the dog handler course entirely through RPL
RPL is available to individuals who can demonstrate competence through documented industry experience and evidence. Examples include Security Officers who have recently let their dog handler licence lapse, and some others with relevant experience such as Police, Corrections, Defence, etc.
› Government Funding
No Government funding or subsidies are available for this course.
› Additional Fees
Licence fees are not included in the course fees.
All licensing fees are payable directly to the Office of Fair Trading when applying for a Class 1 Security Providers Licence.
Other administrative fees may apply in circumstances such as cancellations, extensions, rebooking or reassessment. Refer to Asset College’s fee schedule and Student Handbook for full details.
› Prior Qualification – Mandatory
Students must hold the CPP20218 Certificate II in Security Operations before enrolling.
This is essential because the dog handler skill set alone does not meet the training requirements for a Queensland Class 1 Security Providers Licence.
› LLND Review
All students must complete a Language, Literacy, Numeracy and Digital (LLND) review prior to enrolment to ensure they have the foundational skills needed for online learning, written assessment and safe participation in practical K9 activities.
